Mission & Objectives
The DSS charity’s objectives are to advance the education of children and young people aged 6 – 16 years, living in the London borough of the Royal
borough of Kensington and Chelsea in particular the Dalgarno area by promoting educational and recreational activities.
DSS is working toward achieving its mission to build up the capacity of the local people, with more focusing to those who are most socially excluded community of ethnic minorities so that they could be fully engaged and get access to the mainstream provision.
DSS managed by 5 members from the local community working as volunteers. Three qualified teachers and 6 volunteers responsible of running the day to day activities. The management committee, committed to quarterly meetings to take responsibility both in management and finance and fund raising and
AGM.
Achievements
In the last 12 months DSS created many opportunities for volunteering employment and training, education, sport and cultural and social activities.
Education
The Dalgarno supplementary education aims to provide local children and young people with after school English, Maths, Arabic and basic IT to raise the standard of underachievers in a deprived area.
The school runs 5 hours a week on Saturdays throughout the school year at Dalgarno community Centre. DSS also runs a 2 hours maths on Tuesday at supplementary school Resource Centre – Westway.
Students from DSS participated in extra curriculum activities and visited the parliament at Westminster and KC town Hall.
Sport
The main purpose of our sport programme is to raise awareness about the health livening and keeping fit from an early age by practicing sport, especially football. Indeed the along and continuous training and coaching we offered during the year has brought a very positive result to about 25 children and young people both in changing the players behaviour of and on the pitch. There is an increase in demand but due to lack of fund the number
is limited to 25.
DSS extend its service to adult from Dalgarno area to take part in the sauna club at WestWay fitness Club and Gem at West Way sport
Centre. Young people from DSS participatein cycling sport at Richmond Park.
Training
Members of the management committee, teachers and volunteers have been trained in the following areas:
o Supplementary school management organised by Westway resource center.
o Parental powers 2 management members involve in training how to empower parents.
o First Aid – Two other members involve in First Aid Training organised by C. F. A. T.
o Computer Training – One volunteer has got training in excel.
Fundraising
During the 2008/09 we managed to raise fund enough to pay 3 teachers, cover the volunteer transport and subsistent and management to cover maintenance cost to our football and other sport activities. We also managed to cover the rent and other centre services for the whole study year.
We made a joint fundraising with other supplementary school and with the support of Westway Development resource Centre. We expect to cover over 50 % of education expenses.
We have a plan to raise the other 50% from other sources such as the Kensington Housing Trust, Notting Hill Housing Trust and KCSC.
DSS also hosted the open day organised by the WestWay for partnerships. We have provided tradition food and drink to guests from different supplementary schools and member from KCSC.
Meeting and socialisations
The management committee had the 3 quarterly meetings and monitor all the projects, gets feedback and approved the activities. They also express their
happiness commitment to continue supporting on voluntary bases. DSS also organised a joint get together to celebrate the Eid where parents, children and
young people enjoyed their food and nice music in the same time parents has their annual meeting as part of the day. We also organised a big celebration at the school year end where we served food and drink and certificate and Gifts to higher achievers.
Challenges
o Fundraising problem: We need more qualified and experienced person to secure the continuity and provide good quality service to the community.
o It is very difficult to meet the high demand of children and young people to our services due to lack of class rooms and lack of funds to hire more teachers
o Lack of enough trained staff and volunteers and difficult to keep volunteers longer.
Conclusion
We can confidently say that trustees recognise their responsibilities for keeping proper accounting records and prepared a financial statement each
year. There are remarkable improvement in providing quality education, community cohesion, sport and other social activities.
Finally the management members, teachers and volunteers with the support of parents and children will contribute in promoting healthy and friendly community in the area.
